Geilo is one of Norway's oldest and most beloved ski resorts, perched at 800 metres on the vast Hardangervidda mountain plateau — the largest high-altitude plateau in Northern Europe. Midway between Oslo and Bergen on the famous Bergen Railway, Geilo has been welcoming skiers since the 1940s and retains the charm of a classic Norwegian mountain resort.
Geilo has two ski areas — Geilo Skisenter and Vestlia — with a combined 34 slopes, 20 lifts, and 40 km of groomed runs. The terrain is varied, with gentle slopes ideal for families and beginners alongside more challenging runs for intermediate and advanced skiers. A free shuttle bus connects the two areas throughout the day.
Snow conditions at Geilo are exceptionally reliable thanks to its high altitude and exposed plateau location. The season regularly runs from late November through April.
Geilo is a paradise for cross-country skiers, with 220 km of groomed trails spreading out across the Hardangervidda. This is some of the most dramatic and open cross-country terrain in Norway, with long, windswept ridges and vast frozen lakes. The trails connect to neighbouring mountain areas, making multi-day ski touring possible.
Geilo is uniquely served by train — the Bergen Railway stops right in the village, with journey times of approximately 3 hours from Oslo and 4.5 hours from Bergen. This makes Geilo one of the most car-free-friendly ski resorts in Scandinavia. By car, it's 3 hours from Oslo via the RV7.
