Sälen — Scandinavia's Favourite Family Ski Resort

Sälen is Scandinavia's largest ski destination by skier visits and the undisputed king of family ski holidays in Sweden. Located in Dalarna, western Sweden, Sälen is actually a collection of four interconnected ski areas — Lindvallen, Högfjället, Tandådalen, and Hundfjället — offering a combined 100+ slopes and 40+ lifts across a vast mountain plateau.

The Resort

The SkiStar-operated Sälen resorts are purpose-built for families, with a gentle terrain profile, excellent ski schools, and a vast range of child-friendly activities. Lindvallen is the largest and most popular of the four areas, with a lively village centre, the famous ski-through McDonald's, and plenty of beginner and intermediate terrain. Högfjället offers some of the area's steeper runs and a more relaxed village atmosphere.

Total vertical drop is modest compared to Alpine resorts, but what Sälen lacks in steepness it more than compensates for with breadth — the sheer number of runs and lifts means queues are rare even during peak Christmas and February half-term weeks.

Activities

Sälen is as much about the off-slope experience as the skiing. Dog sledding, snowmobile safaris, ice fishing, and snowshoe hikes through the birch forests are all on offer. The SkiStar app makes lift access, ski school bookings, and restaurant reservations seamless.

Getting There

Sälen is approximately 4 hours by car from Stockholm. The closest airport is Mora-Siljan (MXX), though most visitors drive or take the direct ski bus from Stockholm. Dedicated bus services operate from Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Oslo throughout the winter season.

Where to Stay

Nordic Alps lists a wide selection of ski-in/ski-out cabins, apartments, and hotel rooms across all four Sälen resorts. Many properties sleep large groups, making Sälen ideal for multi-family holidays.
