Why Hemsedal

Big-mountain skiing, three hours from Oslo.

Most Nordic resorts are forest skiing. Hemsedal is not. A large share of the terrain sits above the tree line – open faces, bowls and the most serious lift-accessed off-piste in southern Norway. It averages more than three metres of snow a year and backs it up with snowmaking.

Terrain that keeps up

Forty-four kilometres of piste, 47 runs and 830 metres of vertical, with a 6 km descent saved for the last run of the day.

The longest season in Norway

Open 11 December to 2 May. Evening skiing Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from December to March.

Après that actually exists

A village with a real bar scene when the lifts close – not one hotel lobby and an early night.

Where to stay

Lodges at the lifts, apartments in the village, cabins down the valley.

Hemsedal is compact. You are either at the lifts, in the village with the restaurants, or in a cabin with space and quiet ten minutes away. Which one depends on who is in the group.

Ski-in/ski-out lodges

At the base of the lifts: ski room, restaurant downstairs, first chair without touching the car.

Village apartments

In the centre: walk to dinner, ski bus to the lifts, and the bars are a short walk home.

Cabins in the valley

Sauna, room for two families, parking at the door and cross-country trails outside.

Getting there

Three hours from Oslo. No mountain pass to worry about.

Route 7 and 52 from Oslo or Gardermoen, about three hours, and four from Bergen. Airport buses run daily in season, and once you are here the free SkiStar bus links the village and the base areas.
