Getting to Stranda
Fly to Ålesund, cross one fjord by car ferry, and you are at the gondola in 90 minutes. No mountain pass, no five-hour drive – the west coast is closer than it looks.
Book your flight. We do the rest. We are here, on the mountain — transfer, keys, lift pass and the answer to whatever comes up at four o'clock on a Saturday afternoon.
By air

Get a price for the last leg
Tell us when your flight lands and we will send you straight to the people who sell it, with your time already filled in. We do not resell transport — you book it where it is cheapest, and we make sure you are looking at the right departure.
The KLM flight from Amsterdam lands around lunchtime, which puts you at the gondola before the lifts close. The ferry runs late into the evening, so a later flight is not a problem – only a longer drive in the dark.
Airport transfer
No scheduled airport bus runs all the way to Strandafjellet. The options are a hire car, a pre-booked private transfer (minibus for a group is good value), or bus to Stranda via Ålesund and a taxi for the last 6 km up to the ski area.
Not sure which to take?
Send us your flight and we will tell you what we would do ourselves — including when the answer is the car and not the bus. We book the accommodation; the transport you book direct, and you keep the difference.
By car
- Ålesund Airport (Vigra)
- 85 km — 1 h 30 min incl. ferry
- Ålesund town
- 55 km — 1 h 15 min incl. ferry
- Geiranger
- 45 km — 1 h (Hellesylt ferry in summer; road via Eidsdal in winter)
- Oslo
- 480 km — about 7 h
- Bergen

The route from the airport: E39/E136 through Ålesund to Magerholm, car ferry to Sykkylven (about 20 minutes, departures every 20–30 minutes in daytime, pay on board or by AutoPASS), then road 60 to Stranda and up to Strandafjellet. Winter tyres are mandatory; the road up to the ski area is kept open and ploughed.
Parking
Free at the gondola base and by the apartments. Arrive before 10 on a sunny Saturday in March and you park by the lift.
Getting around once you are here
Everything at the ski area is within walking distance of the gondola. The village – shops, the hotel, the fjord – is 6 km down the hill; with a car it is five minutes, otherwise a taxi.
The best weeks are February to Easter
Stranda gets its snow from the sea, and most of it falls from January on. By February the base is deep, in March the days are long and the sun reaches the fjord side, and Easter here is skiing in a T-shirt with 1,000 metres of white above the water.
Early season is weekends only. In December the lifts run on weekends until Christmas; from February they run daily. Check the opening days for a week before Christmas or in January.
Car, then nothing
Most of our guests rent a car at Ålesund Airport and drive. One ferry, no mountain pass, and the car pays for itself the day you drive to Geiranger.
Travelling without a car: bus from the airport to Ålesund, then bus 250 towards Stranda (via the ferry), and a taxi up to the ski area. Allow three hours and check the last departure.
Build the trip you want
Stranda is a ski week with a fjord weekend built in. Two nights in Ålesund, the Art Nouveau town on the coast, before or after the mountain; a day in Geiranger when the sun is out; or Strandafjellet one week and Hemsedal the next on the way back to Oslo.
- Ålesund
- 55 km — 1 h 15 min
- Geiranger
- 45 km — about 1 h
- Hemsedal
- 340 km — 5 h, on the way to Oslo
A charter sells you one resort, one week, one flight home. Flying into a real airport means you can split the week, add two nights in a city, or ski two mountains and let us move you between them. Tell us what you want the week to look like and we will put it together.
Arrival days
Check-in usually from 16:00, check-out by 11:00. Saturday and Sunday changeovers; shorter stays midweek.
Checked 29 October 2026 against Strandafjellet, Fjord Norway and the airlines' published routes. Ferry and bus operators revise winter timetables — confirm before you travel.
