Why Sjusjøen

The winter holiday that isn't about lifts.

Sjusjøen is a plateau of forest, lakes and open mountain with the best-groomed trail network in Norway. Families ski out for an hour and a hot chocolate; serious skiers do 40 km before lunch. Small alpine hill for the kids, Hafjell 30 minutes away for the rest.

Trails from the door

Most cabins sit on the trail network – no car, no parking, just clip in.

Early and late season

Natrudstilen has man-made snow from November and the plateau holds it into April.

Cabins as they should be

Wood stove, sauna, drying room, and a view. Six to fourteen beds, priced per week.

Where to stay

Cabins first. Then apartments, then a couple of good hotels.

Sjusjøen is cabin country. Book a whole cabin for the family, or an apartment or hotel room if you'd rather not cook.

Private cabins

Classic timber cabins with sauna and wood stove, trails outside, 6–14 beds.

Getting there

Twenty minutes above Lillehammer. Two and a half hours from Oslo.

E6 to Lillehammer or Brøttum, then up the mountain road. Trains to Lillehammer with bus or taxi the last stretch – and Hafjell's alpine slopes are 30 minutes away if the teenagers insist.
