Why Åre

Ski all day. Then walk to dinner.

Åre is the one Nordic resort built like a proper ski town: the train stops in the middle of the village, the lifts start where the shops end, and the mountain has hosted the World Championships three times. Nearly half the slopes are marked easy, so the numbers work for families as well as for people who came for the race pistes.

Ninety-one kilometres

Three linked areas – Åre By, Björnen and Duved/Tegefjäll – on one pass, with around 40 lifts between them.

One long way down

From Åreskutan at over 1,300 m to the village at 380 m in a single 6.5 km descent – the longest run on this list.

A village that stays open

Sixty-plus restaurants and bars, night skiing at the Race Arena and in Björnen, and everything walkable end to end.

Where to stay

Village hotels, ski-in apartments, cabins in Björnen and Duved.

Åre By puts you in the middle of it. Björnen is the family side – quieter slopes, its own kids' areas. Duved is calmer and cheaper, with the bus to both.

Hotels in the village

Walk to the lift, walk to dinner, walk home. Pool and spa in most of them.

On the mountain and in Björnen: ski to the door, own kitchen, room for the whole group.

Getting there

An hour from Åre Östersund. Two from Trondheim.

Fly to Åre Östersund and drive an hour, or come from Trondheim in about two – the easy way in for Norwegian guests. From Stockholm it is around seven hours by car, or the night train that stops in the middle of the village.
