Stranda. Ski above the fjord.
Strandafjellet is the mountain Norwegian skiers talk about when nobody is listening: a gondola to 1,062 metres, the Storfjord 400 metres below, and off-piste that fills with snow off the Atlantic. Ninety minutes from Ålesund Airport, one ferry on the way.
Why Stranda
Powder off the Atlantic, a fjord at your feet.
Strandafjellet sits on the Storfjord, the waterway into the Geirangerfjord. Weather comes straight off the sea, which means snow – a lot of it – and a mountain Norwegian freeriders rate as the best in the country. The pistes are quiet, the gondola does the climbing, and the view from the top is a UNESCO fjord.
Open bowls and tree runs on both sides of the gondola, and ski touring up Roaldshorn when the sun comes out. Best in March and April.
18 runs from 1,062 m down to the base at 400 m: half of it gentle, so families and first weeks work here too. Night skiing on selected evenings.
Geiranger, Trollstigen and Ålesund are all a short drive. Ski in the morning, stand by the fjord in the afternoon – that is the week.
Where to stay
Apartments by the gondola, cabins on the hill, hotel by the fjord.
Most of Stranda's beds are privately owned apartments and cabins around the ski area – ski-in on the good days, a few minutes' drive on the rest. The village and the hotel are down on the fjord, six minutes away.

Fly to Ålesund, one ferry, and you are there in 90 minutes.
From Ålesund Airport (Vigra) it is 85 km: through Ålesund, the Magerholm–Sykkylven car ferry across the fjord, then 25 minutes to Stranda. Amsterdam has daily direct flights; London Gatwick from this winter.
