Getting to Åre

Sweden's best-known ski town, reached by train into the village centre — or by air through Trondheim, two hours away on the Norwegian side.

Book your flight. We do the rest. We are here, on the mountain — transfer, keys, lift pass and the answer to whatever comes up at four o'clock on a Saturday afternoon.

By air

Airport Distance To the resort Direct from the UK
Åre Östersund (OSD) 80 km 1 h 10 min by car None direct — connect via Stockholm Arlanda or Copenhagen
Trondheim Værnes (TRD) 130 km about 2 h by car London

Get a price for the last leg

Tell us when your flight lands and we will send you straight to the people who sell it, with your time already filled in. We do not resell transport — you book it where it is cheapest, and we make sure you are looking at the right departure.

Aim to land by 15:00. Trondheim is two hours away by road and Åre–Östersund just over one. Both are short enough that an afternoon landing still works, which is unusual up here.

Most British routes come through Stockholm Arlanda or Copenhagen. Land in the morning and the train gets you to Åre the same evening; land in the afternoon and you are arriving in the dark, or staying a night on the way.

SJ releases its winter timetable about three months ahead. Book earlier than that and the journey planner will show the connection but not the fare.

Airport transfer

Åre Transfer , operated by Flygtaxi, runs by bus or taxi between both airports and fixed stops in Åre and Duved through the winter season, timed to SAS flights. Booking required.

Länstrafiken line 4 links Åre Östersund Airport with Östersund city centre in about 30 minutes, to a fixed timetable rather than to flight times. A single is 32 SEK.

Not sure which to take?

Send us your flight and we will tell you what we would do ourselves — including when the answer is the train and not a car. We book the accommodation; the transport you book direct, and you keep the difference.

By train

The station is in the heart of the village. SJ runs day trains and nightly sleepers from Stockholm all year, the night train continuing to Duved. Snälltåget adds seasonal night services from Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö. From Norway, SJ Nord runs twice daily Trondheim – Storlien, continuing through Åre.

Parking

Free at Duved, Tegefjäll, Ullådalen and Rödkullen — register your plate in the Aimo app. Elsewhere it is 25 SEK an hour, charged only between 09:00 and 16:00; outside those hours it is free. EV charging at car parks, supermarkets and many rental properties.

Getting around once you are here

The SkiStar Bus is free with a valid lift pass, on four lines: 701 to the Åre travel centre, 702 via Björnen to Sadeln, 703 to Duved and Tegefjäll, and 704 in the evening.

The best weeks are the last ones

March and the first half of April are the finest skiing of the year up here. The days are long, the sun is on the slopes instead of behind the trees, the snow base is at its deepest after a full winter of cold, and the queues from February half-term have gone home.

And the season runs longest here. Åre sits at 63°N: by late March the lifts open in daylight and close in daylight, and the top of the mountain holds its snow well into spring. By then the ski charters have stopped — but Åre is reached by train, and through Trondheim and Östersund, which run all year.

Build the trip you want

Åre pairs naturally with Trondheim rather than with the Norwegian ski resorts — the airport is two hours away and the city is worth two nights.

A charter sells you one resort, one week, one flight home. Flying into a real airport means you can split the week, add two nights in a city, or ski two mountains and let us move you between them. Tell us what you want the week to look like and we will put it together.

Arrival days

Friday or Saturday arrival for cabins and apartments; Sunday is the main travel day. Hotel rooms can be booked for any day.
